Smart UV Project Question

Not sure if this has been asked before, but is there a way to actively see which faces are selected through a smart uv project? I have a model that - so far - has almost 40K faces. I need to put different textures on different parts of the model, and I can’t differentiate exactly where and which are what…!
I’m still somewhat noobulescent, so if I’m going at this the wrong way (with a smart uv project on a large model vs. some other method), please, those more learn-ed, let me know!

If I understand correctly, you should enable the toggle in the uv image editor that says ‘keep uv and edit mode selection’ in sync.
