Smaug the Magnificent

Thank you Kansas15! I was thinking of the scenen already, It woulds be very difficult to place him on a great hill of coins, but maybe I’ll make him destroy the wooden city of Esgaroth. That’ll be a cool scene!

Destroying the city of Esgaroth might be harder than a mountain of coins, if you want to make it look good. All those buildings, the fire, smoke, and maybe the people too. Unless maybe if you want to compose scene from a high altitude looking down, with Smaug swooping towards a low-detail burning city, occluded by smoke.

Another idea for your basket, might be the assault on Erebor – outside the mountain, or within the very halls of Thrain.

The dragon is coming along nicely.

Can I please see a wire if it’s not a problem.

Yes, you’re right, Samjh. Maybe I’ll just let him smash the “doorstep” first, for starters. Thanks for the tips!
Ice3cold: Sure, here it is:

That’s great!

R you gonna do a scenary?

The model looks great! My only thots would be to make the front legs smaller than the rear ones, and add some “meat” to the thigh segment on the rear legs. Even if you leave them, tho, they look great… much better than I could accomplish!

use creases (shift+e) to make the subsurfed wings more sharp.

Wow, thank you!
And yes, I’m doing some scenery also, and maybe an animation someday… That’s still very far away, tho.

Hey, thanks very much, that means a lot to me. I’m still a newbie myself, or so I thought. Thanks for the leg tips. I think I’m gonna make-over the hands and feet, which are not that great in my opinion. And I’m also adding some things to the head, you all will see. And mzungu, of course you can accomplish that. It only takes some practise.

Yes, I already knew about that, I even applied it to the wings, but thanks for the tip anyway.

Thanks everyone for the support. It really makes me glad. Well, Keep tha C&C comin’ I would say! Update coming soon.

Here’s the remake of the feet, have to add toenails still.
The design for the feet I saw on a Greg Towner dragon model (www.gregtowner.com) so the feet design credits go to him.
In the next update I will make other arms.
Oh and added an extra pair of horns too, which you can’t see very well in my render.
Here’s the render:

C&C needed!

Could we please get a different view. I think it looks cool from the side but I would like to see him from different views.

Of course!
Here they are:

Enjoy

That’s a very nice dragon, I see it’s coming along nicely. The head is good, looks fearsome ! Maybe give it a forked tongue.
I do have one crit for the body, the forearms look much too thick relative to the shoulder, it’d have trouble lifting them. Otherwise, nice work.

Thanks! Yes, you’re right, I still have to do a tongue. And I’ll shrink the arms somewhat. Thanks for the tips!

That looks awsome. How long did it take you to model it so far??

Great work and it’s looking better by the moment. Hope to see more detail.

hey this is coming along very nicely

thanks for the comments on my texture tests
i tried to find some tutorials that i used to learn but they have either been moved, or deleted, sorry

anyway if you were to post a .blend i would love to have a try at textureing the head, just for fun, nothing serious

anyway great model lookforward to updates

Isn’t Smaug golden?

Apart from that, very nice.

Thx! I guess it took me altogether about 3-5 hours. I don’t really know, maybe more.

Thank you! And don’t worry, details you will see.

Thanks for the effort, and yeah, I’ll post the head some day. I’d really love to see my dragon textured by you. But then the head model should be final, or else you’d have an older “version”.
Thanks!

Well, actually it’s a red-golden dragon. So red at the top, a bit more gold at the sides and he has a white belly, at least that’s what Tolkien says about him in “The Hobbit”. It will be fairly difficult to make the texture, too.

Everybody thanks once again for the nice comments. I really didn’t think you lot would like it that much. Thankyouveryveryverymuchindeed!

Ok, this thread’s getting dusty, but I won’t let it die! Since I’ve had enough of my Buzz Lightyear ( damn unmotivated me :<) I thought it would be time for an update. Here’s what I’ve got on the hands so far.

And I swear I’ll finish this project!

The hands seem to look too human-like at this point.
