Smoothing groups in Blender?

I’m recreating this object made in 3dsmax.

It’s explained how you select part of the faces and use different smoothing groups to get different shapes. If I select Bevel modifier on the shape I get something similar but can’t get it the right way.

  • How to recreate different smoothing groups in Blender to get a variety of shape falloff?
  • Is there something similar in Blender to align to viewport modifier in 3dsmax (towards the end of the video)?
  • How to create crevices on the object as was shown, circular and curved ?
