This is my first post as I’m new to Blender. I’ve been using C4D for about 5 years.
I guess my question is pretty simple, but I’m a little confused at the moment.
In C4D I can call up a sphere primitive object and it’s created along with something
called a phong tag that provides phong shading to the otherwise very faceted mesh
object. When you view the sphere in the editor area (with shading on) or when you
render it, it appears perfectly smooth (this is without subdivision surfaces turned on).
If you delete the phong tag from the Object Manager, the sphere appears very faceted
and that’s how a sphere looks when I create one in Blender.
I’m I missing something? Isn’t there anyway to smooth a primitive other than SubD?
Whats more, in Blender, when in Edit Mode, the “Smooth” and “Flat” buttons only affect the selected mesh elements, so you can make half your sphere faceted and the other half smooth!
Also, you can access the smooth shading function while in edit mode by hitting the “w” key to bring up the specials menu and selecting “Shade Smooth”. I like this because I hate scrolling through menus looking for buttons.
Hey ibmike take it easy on yourself. Blender’s interface, like all 3D apps, is busy busy with controls, and missing a button just means you’re new, not stupid
I wouldn’t say you’re stupid, just that you’re uninformed. You might find it useful to check out the on-line blender course at <http://www.cdschools.org/Page/455>, under the auspices of Central Dauphin High School, in Harrisburg. It’s a good introduction, and covers items such as the one you asked about.
