Can someone please advise me if it is possible to smooth the weight group with a MODIFIER. I know I can use dynamic paint but it causes an overhead.
I’m modeling a sofa and trying to specify parts with Weights where Folds will be. Folds are created using Displacement modifier with vertex group. As you can see, without Smoothing/Blurring the group I am left with very sharp effect:
Not sure if it’s possible to smooth a weight group with a modifier, doubt it. Can’t you just change the influence of displacement modifier. I mean, you could use laplacian smooth modifier with a group assigned ot it, maybe that could work, no?
Did you try the smooth operator in weight paint mode? You can select the vertices in edit mode, go to weight paint mode, check the vertex selection thingy down by the layers and use Smooth.
You can try to use Vertex Weight Edit modifier from Vertex Weight group of modifiers.
It can provide you with editing weights based on modifier’s settings, including adding them to group being edited according to texture (which can be anything). So if you add texture of Clouds type, modifier will make weights appear only where texture is white (it will act as image mask). I don’t think it can really smoothen weights only in the corners of existing vertex group on your mesh, however probably it can make something close to that.
Thank you everyone for your tips on workflow, I have studied them! Vertex Weight group modifiers got me the result i was after with change to the fallout type. The Custom Curve fallout is incredibly powerful and I am happy to see curve based control in modifiers If only we’d have it in Bevel or Solidify, life would be complete!
Here’s an example of Custom Curve fallout modification of Weights + Displacement creating rims:
