I think this is a much easier way:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials/Snap
It explains how to use the new magnetic snap options.
but you need to get the object in edit mode. is that possible to put 2 differents objects in edit mode so as to use the snap function without joining them before?
Nope, they would have to be joined, L with your cursor over one object in edit mode and separate them.
But the snap in the tut is different from the way you snapped , I believe.

You can move the objects in object mode by:
Select the object to be moved and go into edit mode. Select the face you want to touch the other object. The snap->cursor to selection.
Now tab to object mode and click the centre cursor button in F9 buttons. Next slect the object you want to move to and tab into edit mode.
Select the face you want your object to touch, and the snap->cursor to selection. Now tab to object mode and select the object you want to move and snap->selection to cursor.
You may have to rotate the object moved from view num pad 7, but other than that, it works without joining. Make sure to apply rotation and scaling.
