Snow Tree

My image, finished. Came out at about half an hour render time, and the whole picture contains about 1.6 million vertices, 1.4 million of which are the tree in the middle, without subsurfing (didn’t dare try to subsurf it). Thanks to Modron for sharing the alpha-mapping trick for the other trees. All done entirely in blender, with zero post-production. Tree modelled entirely by me from scratch(no scripts) and all textures procedural made by me in blender. Roughly ten hours of work, including multiple renderings and lots of trial and error.

Comments and criticism welcome!

1.6, that’s just insane…
It looks great, but the sun should be more dim to give it the gloomy feeling that the rest of the picture suggests. Maybe some post-processing, so the beams of light won’t be corrupted? They look very good.

Also, the branches right in front of the picture could probably be a tad further away to get rid of the blocky feel the have. Or maybe you could cut off a single branch from the original tree, and subsurf just that…

nice work.

i am glad to have competition in the high vert/poly area anyday.

its good to see someone else working over 1 million verts (i am doing 3-7 mill on a regualr basis  )

and nice ot see a tree modeled rather than using the script

Alltaken

I’de go up that high if 200 mghz could and 512 mb of ram doesn’t help

That turned out really nicely. Also, if you want to put more stuff in it, you can take you current render, and load it as your background image, and stick more branches and stuff in the foreground.

great setup! lightting is fine, gives a nice atmosphere!

the treetrunk in the cente and to th left look slightly translucent where they meet the ground.
The overhead branches to the left look a bit rectangular/blocky, and the snow in the foreground has some straight edges (or maybe I need glasses?)

Great picture. The tree on the left unfortunately seems a little like a ghost tree. It is obviously transparent. Did the tree in the middle just die?

Only thing that bothers me is, that your model doesn’t get show well in this picture. Everything (except the foreground) looks very 2dimensional. In that sense it is a little waste of vertices. I mean, the first not scripted tree and it looks like a 2d texture of a tree. :-?

But a great picture nevertheless!

1.6 million
My pc gets slow at 15k and gets stuck at 25k…
Ah well, I’m working on a laptop after all.
Might be better with a decent pc.

It doesn’t show up :frowning:

yeah, i’m not getting an image either.

psh, i can do 3-7 million verts. all you have to do is open up blender, select the default cube, and subdivide it about 20, 000 times… :stuck_out_tongue:

WHY THE HELL DO YOU GUYS KEEP BUMPING OLD THREADS!!!???

it wasn’t me!!! blame charlesworth!!! argh!!!

Cowardice seems to still be a part of this world.

Anyway, you know why wee keep “bumping old threads”.
We just click the links at the bottom where “similar threads” are displayed, and we do not take the date into account.
Some call it laziness, yeah, but isn’t it possible to remove threads older than x months from the “similar thread” window?

What the hell, charles? It’s a joke man, no one really cares if an old thread gets bumped every so often. Hence the 12 exclaimation points at the end of that last sentance.
