So you want to work in the game industry?

I thought this hits close to home.

Very depressing video lol

Ha Ha, great, nice video, it’s fun to see all people on Youtube who had no ideas of the game industry and even didn’t know of to make small games with the bge or something like that and were saying “It broke my dreams”

Personnaly it wasn’t depressive for me, I don’t plan to work in the video games industry and I know how to make a game:)

I think most people here on BA are doing games for hobbies and they have more than just an idea so it souldn’t brake their dreams.

But yes, I know people like the small robot.

I read the original text some years ago. I think it can help "wannabe"s to adjust their expectations even if it shatters the big dream.

As far as I remember this text contained a few (not so positive) remarks on hobby game development too. Just now there are some more options as discussed, for example you can create a game and sell it at various marketplaces for small applications (e.g. iStore, Android etc.) or as a browser game.

My conclusion out of this is:

I keep my dream - to create a game from my idea. So I get the fun in making it, without to worry deadlines or the need to make money.

If it fails - ok,
if it impresses other - cool,
if it makes money - even cooler ;).

But it is a hobby and will not be more than this. It is not a must it is a can :D.

It’s a very good video to show to lots and lots of people that wander off to game development zone exclaiming they’re going to be professional “game designers” without having any skills. Playing lots of games doesn’t make you a game designer much like living in many houses doesn’t make you an architect. It’s sad so many people have misconceptions about it.

For me, I’m gonna continue on working solo without schedule, without pressure. I have my other profession for now to support family of 3 and I’m trying to improve on my projects to one day release something that sells or try for a job in a local game dev company perhaps. But until then, just a passionate hobby.

It’s all about lining up expectations with reality.

If any of you have Half-Life 2 Lost Coast or either episodes, the developer commentary is a great for learning. They talk about Characters, environments (atmosphere, emotion they put off), how the player needs breaks from combat, humanization, rewarding the player with vistas or information given by characters, what arenas are, etc. . .

I found this to be a bit inspiring:
