this is a small project i completed. I was testing texture and lighting. c&c welcome.
Matt, Its a GREAT shader and the background lighting is excellent, but the composition is a bit off. Try adding some meaning to it. At the moment its just a lighting+material test, but with some tweaking, it could be a great little scene.
You could start with making the sphere sit in the centre of the light beam
