Soft / Solid Normals Question

Hi guys!
I have a question for you.

I’m modeling some low poly stuff, and I’m having problems with the normals, well kind of.
There is no problem to set a face soft or solid, but…
what If I want to set solid (no soft normals) a ring of edges? There is a way to do it?

There is some example.
I want to set the selected edge ring solid but only the edge ring, the other faces/edges should be soft.

Am I talking with no sense? :eek:

I have a problem with the Edge Split Modifier

Blender separates the geometry and creates more geometry.
With low poly modeling this is bad, really bad.

There is way to do it like the “other” 3d packages?
