Title says it all for anyone who knows the answer but if you’re a treasure seeker…
Blender 2.79 allowed for Hair as Ribbons and the Geometry flyout/dropdown then allowed those ribbons to render as 2 dimensional curve or line objects. It was strange but gave attractive, stylized results.
Blender 2.9 has 3 dimensional curve renderings that aren’t attractive for my goals. Is there a 2D render method somewhere? OLD result from a YT video I made on this…
Appreciated! Unfortunately no settings there will let me flatten it out. Even with backlighting, it catches light like a tube - the answer might be in some complicated Material Node setup.
I don’t have a place at the table for Eevee yet - I’m a Cycles throwback, but a quick conversion with minimal fuss shows kind of flatter “Strips.” Thank you for pointing that out!
(Ground coverage is easier with Eevee - slightly fatter blades at equal settings for what it’s worth.) Same in Cycles - adjusted .01 Radius Scale to .015
Here is one in Cycles…and you might try it as “render as an instance object”, under the Render settings in the Particles/Hair settings…you can then use an alpha mask for the blade shape and makeup 4-5 different “Blades” in a collection and render a collection.
Thank you @RSEhlers for putting me on the right track.
One blade of grass gets this Particle Instance modifier and with Create Along Paths enabled, it’s perfect since the geometry is render time and curves and sizes can be randomized the way I envision. It’s better in fact because the “ribbons” aren’t always FACING the way they used to. No more noodles!
