I want to hand-paint my dog model in Substance Painter 2023. It is a medium-sized mesh, not high poly and not low poly. I am not wanting to add any displacement or bump maps. I just want to hand-paint it in Substance Painter.
Do I need to bake it? And which of the categories do I need to check for baking? There will only be the hand-painted color. I am wanting to do it in Substance, which I am just learning because it is too difficult to do in Blender. (I wish Blender would have the brush cursor follow the normals on the object as it does in Sculpt mode.
And are there any good tutorials for this limited use of Painter for beginners like myself?
So you use a tablet which does measure the angle and direction according to the normal so it can be of any usage while painting ?
Because if not then the 3D brush with its falloff behave like a sphere and not like a circle (actually disk) in 2D…
…also even the Dynamic Stroke feature of SP only…
…can use one or more of the following behaviors :
Stamp Index
Time
Random Seed
…so i’m very interested how showing a normal on the brush tip should be of any help… because even in real world painting onto an object someone would rotate the object ( or moving oneself into position) to look straight onto the object to have the best “painting view”…
…and there is also the 2D view to paint on…
As i said… i’m eager to learn for what this is an absolute must be… and how this was accomplished before ??
Magnavis, I don’t see the option to bake “Diffuse” in Substance Painter. Is called by another name in that program?
Okidoki, I don’t know what you wanted me to look at in your Polycount link. I use a Wacom Intuos Pro and sometimes a Cintiq. So I don’t quite know what you meant by “measure the angle according to the normal” relative to my tablet(s). Even using a mouse the result is the same. Below are two short mp4’s showing what I am talking about. The circular disc representing the brush size is always parallel to the normal(s) it is hovering over, both in Blenders Sculpt mode and also in Substance Painter when painting in the 3D view.
The first vid here is in Blender Texture Paint mode;
… then you can control the angle and ttil of the brush…
This feature of SP may be “nice”… ( albeit actually drawing something would be even more clear…)
And according to the link:
→ Even before SP… people did some drawing on 3D models… so even if such a feature is nice… it’s not absolutly needed to make something…
And i guess after drawing you just have to save the edited image… (if SP isn’t already doing this… when saved… )
Then no, you dont have to bake them for being able to paint. If you just want to paint simple colors onto the basecolor channel and dont use generators or any advanced masks then you should not need any of these.
The diffuse channel is the basecolor channel in substance.
