For a school project. Due to time constraints, it’s likely not to happen, but I’d like to finish the head regardless.
The issue lies in the forehead area, I’m trying a loop based way of modelling the head, which works fantastically until I reach the forehead.
I’ve only gotten a proper forehead on one model, an alien done (possibly) unconventionally, involving a UV sphere molded as the basis for the head.
I’ve included the .blend in the hopes that somebody may be able to look at it and tell me what’s wrong, and also how I might go about fixing it. I’m aware from a top view, it’s a mess, and no matter how I try and fix it, it seem ineffective.
welcome to BA forum!!!first of all i’d like to say…thats pretty good modelling and i hope it goes well…and second id like to say…goodnight im goin to sleep…peace!
Well then, I did some fiddling around, looked at the Joan tutorial (wicked reading, there, thanks for the heads up on it), and ended up with the head being full.
I still think I want to make her Somalian for the school project, but I’ll more than likely continue the head and possibly body once finished that.
Some areas I’m not quite sure how to fix are the lips, and how she looks sad. That’s a desirable quality for my school project, but not quite so for a general female figure. If anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated.
Questions, comments, hints and the like are appreciated!
Contagion
Edit: I completely forget to mention the issue with the lips, although it is fairly obvious. It has a sharp crease I can’t get rid of, at the corners, a problem area for me at the best of times.
I’m having pinching issues when I’m trying to UV map this. I watched Greybeards tutorial on the issue, but it doesn’t seem to help. I’ll keep trying, however, maybe I’ll make some headway in the issue.
I fixed the eyes. I suppose I should get a start on modelling the ears soon. They look overly complex, however, I’ll see if I can find Mr.Bomb’s ear tutorial, or use the Joan one.
Oh, the project is going to be a Somalian posed in front of a ruined town, probably a blender render heavily photoshopped. I’m not sure how I’m going to turn the model I currently have into an African face, hopefully UV mapping will change it.
I’d appreciate a list of things that change between Caucasian and African in a face if anybody knows a few offhand.
Thanks a lot,
![file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/Chris/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot-2.jpg](file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/Chris/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot-2.jpg)Well, I’ve finished modelling the ear and attaching it to the head. The only issue is that it’s a horribly poor job, but I’ve made a backup save for my further Doll project, so as not to ruin it with this ear. Next comes UV mapping, painting a basic texture, and possibly normal map generation in zBrush if I can figure it out (I just got it recently).
Any specific areas I may need to focus on in order to make my character look sad, hungry/extremely gaunt, that kind of idea?
I’m sorry about the poor quality of the ear (there’s absolutely no depth) but my image wont show the inside, and I’m under a bit of a deadline for this (it’s worth 10 percent of my overall mark and is due tomorrow o_O)
Well, I’ve advanced some more in my project, as it was due I threw a basic skin color on it and some ears, but as my time got extended, I went in and edited the ears, and now I wish to UV Map it and texture it.
My texture map is giving me a number of issues, and I can’t seem to find any help on head uvmapping through Google, perhaps I’m using the wrong descriptors.
Here is my image:
Shadeless Grey
Skin Base
And here is the images, with Seams, and the result:
Seams
Disasterous UV Map
I’ve tried pinning, pulling and moving vertices, but I’m not overly sure of the general formula for attempting to fix a UV Map, so it’s fairly useless.
EDIT:
I just pinned the two sides and got this:
Which seems significantly better, but the face is still not a face. I’ve tried pinning the extreme top and bottom, but it seems to do nothing, as well as my other pinning attempts.
If anybody could help me solve this mess of a UV Map, I’d be very appreciative.
Well I fixed my UV Mesh up a little bit, I just guessed and welded some seams together after making a test seam map. I just lined each seam with a different color, and when it rendered out noted what met with what. Some of the seams were completely unnecessary it seemed, so I welded them to get a better UV Map.
Then I started in on making a texture to it, and I’m almost done the face, just trying to blend the rest of the head texture with the face (the face is significantly lighter). I’m impressed how fairly realistic it looks, especially with simple lighting and such. The only real issue seems to be a white hole that isn’t in my mesh, UV Map or Texture?
The render may seem a little grainy, I only have AO set to 5 samples for fairly quick renders but still with proper shading.
I’m aware some issues are still present in the face, but for the most part I’m pleased.
Given that it’s my first head, and first attempt texturing with UV Maps, I feel I learned a fair bit, if nothing else.
It looks like a bit of white in the texture, hunt around and make sure the borders are well covered with colour.
The one glitch I could see with the face was that the corners of the mouth crinkled together instead of folding in slightly, but that’s hard to model in the best of circumstances. Over-all, nice job, keep it up.
As you can see, sometimes the only difference between an East African and a Caucasian, Latino, or Indian is skin color, eye color and the curliness of the hair.
Well, I got rid of the white spot by filling the rest of the image in with the base texture, and I’ve started to blend the face and the head. The forehead is still giving me issues, as it’s stretched when it doesn’t seem like it should be. I still need to change the eye color to brown after looking at reference photos, and the undereye needs work (On the uv map, it looks normally painted, but it changed quite a bit when it’s on the model).
Ramp Shaded
Non- Ramp Shaded
I applied my old Ramp Shader skin texture in addition to the Texture, and I’m not quite sure which looks better. Personally, I feel the non-ramp shaded one has more detail, but the forehead looks worse, and overall just looks slightly more unfinished.
I also have a quick render of the image without the Ramp shader, for reference.
I’ll have to investigate how to decrease the usage of the ramp shader while still having it, I’m going to check for opacities and such.
Well, it started out as a female, but I personally think it looks more like a boy, now. Apparently, it has identify conflicts and I suck at defining genders. I used a female reference, but it seems a bit more manly than feminine, but it could just be me spending too much time staring at it.
Any help on choosing a gender and helping to define it might be useful, hopefully it wont mess up my UV map too much. As it stands, unless it messed up the facial area specifically, nothing too intense will be lost, a little bit of tweaking at most.
