Some help with knees and ankles please.

This is my first attempt at animating a character and I’m having a slight issues with the back legs on this dog character. The issue occurs when I try and pose him in a sitting position. The knee and ankle do not go into the correct position. I was hoping there is a way to create a target for the know and ankle but every time I try and attach them to the armature the bone break up.

If someone could give me some pointers that would be greatly appreciated.

set up an ik constraint to the upper part of the leg(bone above the knee joint) to the leg.ik bone(do same for all joints) and dont forget to set your chain lenghts
