so… I decided to improve my drawing skills.
Hope you like it.
Not bad. In fact I quite like it. You conveyed the wood texture very well on the AK.
thank you, GraphiX
for a beginner you got skills, keep working at this and you will go places but I think you need to throw in some studies along with drawing from imagination. Loomis, Bridgeman, Vilppu have really good books on drawing the human figure.
on the gladiator I can already see proportional problems. Here is a quick how to on getting proportion for a male figure in a front or profile view.
do this freehand without the use of a ruler(<- you can use a ruler just to check you did things right at the end). Your eyes are pretty good at finding the half way point between to points, you will be surprised at how close you can get.
-
draw a vertical line between two point, this line represents the overall height of your model
-
divide this line in half, you should have two segments. the half way point is where the crotch of the figure will rest. Lets call the top segment A and the bottom B
-
divide segments A and B in half again, you should now have four segments. look at segment B its halfway mark is the bottom of the knees. You are now done with segment B and should focus only on segment A
4.The half way point of segment A is where the nipples will be, mark it as such. now cut each of those halves of segment A in half again. segment A should now have four parts lets call them 1, 2, 3, 4
-
the first part 1 is the height of the head from crown to chin, the half way mark of Segment A is the nipple line, the 3/4 mark is where the navel falls and the 4 line is the crotch
-
to find where the shoulder fall divide 2 part of segment A into thirds the top third should be the distance from the chin to the bottom of the shoulders.
This is a way of getting the vertical proportions of the standard eight head figure. the are other proporptional systems that use 7 head or 7 1/2 head figures but 8 heads is the most common. Andrew Loomis Figure Drawing for all its worth is the best for explaining figure proportions. Other books are stronger on anatomy, gesture, volume and construction but he is the best I have read so far on proportions and placing figures in perspective.
keep going you are have so much potential
Thank you very much! Your reply has been really usefull to me.
If you read this forum you will see there it is a stiky with books and resources. Go there and get some grasp from some books. Chose ones that you feel easy to folow.
