Just thought I would swing in and post some of my latest work for some of my friends here, done in XSI so i dont feel cool posting it in the wip gallery, so thought the off topic would be best.
For those of you who dont know me and are wondering why im posting XSI stuff at a Blender forum. I got my 3D start with Blender, and love it very dearly, but went to film school and learned XSI, and after school i worked at EA on NBA Live '6 and Fifa Road to World cup for the 360 doing character art.
So now i use mostly XSI personally, tho I used Maya at EA. But still play with blender a bit, but mostly for unwrapping as Blender totally kicks ass with its unwrapping.
So here is my latest char, and my first real cartoon character, was a nice break from striving for “real” looking ppl and chars.
and the riggin’z…

Just about to setup the face shapes for lipsync and blinks etc, its getting there. Let me know what you think!!!
OK, cool, I dont mind it in the WIP, was just tryin to be respectfull, you know, just incase!
Thanks for the replies guys, im currently not working, am on EI (working mans welfare) right now, but im putting my reel and resume out soon to a couple of game companies i know are hireing and gearing up for some big projects. EI time was nice, i did some personal 3D work and wrote a screenplay, and did heaps of research on film making, directing and cinematography etc. But it will be fun to work on games again!!!
A prince? No, i didn’t know that. Don’t know much of the Sonic back story, just played the first couple of games way back in the Genesis days. Neat to know tho, thanks for the info!!!
Cool model, I like the shiny-but-not-too-shiny-ness of the blue material. Can’t wait to see an animation of him running side-scroller style, like the Genesis games
Thanks for the post. I like the way his shader turned out as well, its an Incidence shader, i messed around with the settings and this is the result. Animation may take a while, tho his facial and mouth shapes are comming along, and i know once he is capeable i will HAVE to do some lip sync and animation. Already even got the .wav of Sonic talking from the cartoon ready to go…
Good to be “back” tho i never really left, i just dont frequent or post as often anywhere any more, hardly even post any of my work. But wanted to share Sonic since i love the char and he is turning out well.
I just did a quick test of the facial shapes, well, the eyes anyway. I do have jaw and tounge bones, but will also be adding mouth shapes for lipsync and other stuff like smiles etc…
This was just a quick test, im by no means a great animator so its pretty straight forward stuff to show of the shapes.
Thanks frenzy, some ppl didnt like the look of him at first, tho i dropped the ambience to 0 (had forgot for the renders).
He is pretty fun to animate, i’ve put him in all sorts of poses and stuff, will be funner when i finish the lipsyncin’ stuff, got the sonic .wavs from the cartoon ready to go!!!
Hehe, yeah thats why i liked it. Was just one of the many poses i put him in, roomate and a friend thought it was funny and said keep that render of it, so i did.
I too had never seen Sonic give a finger, must have been about time.
Also never seen a baby smoke a cigarette, seeing all sorts of new stuff today!!!
I think my comment is a matter of opinion/personal taste, but…
In your animation, when he’s doing the pathetic look, the blue of the face comes up from underneath his brown snout. I think it would look better if the snout itself deformed for that purpose.
I will keep that in mind when i do the shapes for the mouth piece (not done yet), along with all the letter shapes and smiles etc…
But to really push the char’s facial ability i needed a lower eye lid (mouth would look funny stretched so extreem for things like a full blink). But i do agree that there could be some shape movement with the mouth area comming up over the eye to help make expressions.
Some other people also suggested not using the blue lower lid from his head mesh, but rather the mouth. So since a few ppl suggested this i did a comparison.
I agree that it looks all right on a slightly sqinted look (far left), but i dont like it for the full on blinks. If his mouth moved that far every time he blinked it would just look weird.
Looking at the comparison, the bottom one does look a bit weird, but the top one doesn’t look so right…From what I’ve seen on the Sonic games, Sonic’s top eyelid goes down further (actually, it goes to the bottom, effectively hiding his eyes, but then again, his eyes are usually sort of merged together at the base). Som maybe you can make the top eyelid go down further, and having the sides of his mouth go upwards, but not too much (to avoid the result in the rightmost bottom expression).
