Here’s what things look like so far:
Another burp.
Excuse me.
Nice one. As mentioned in other thread- we approach subject from different sides but… it hardly matters. I do love results you are showing.
Thank you, RK. Yes, the result is all that’s important, not the approach.
Actually, on this type of ship, the stern was finer than the bow. Back in those days they thought ship hulls should be shaped like fish. This is not the best for things travelling on the surface of the water, but they didn’t know better back then.
I check my progress constantly by looking at the hull from various angles. The upper part of the bulge in the hull shouldn’t quite reach the line I creased earlier on to mark off where the main deck is (just below bottom cannon ports). It should be very gradual when it reaches to this point.

I’d make it tubbier. These things were really heavy, what with all that oak and all those iron cannon, plus they had to carry a lot of ballast down low to counteract the weight of the guns, etc.
The cross section in the middle was almost dead flat across for about one third or more of the total width, then curved up from there to reach maximum width just above the water. This was pretty much the standard middle cross section for anything you might think of as a “galleon” or “pirate ship” or whatever.
Okay, more fish-shaped…
It will become tubbier and more flat-bottomed like my other one as I continue to work on the shape, but I’ll stay within the parameters of the blueprint I use or it will begin to not look right. I know my bow still needs more rounding and the sides of the hull still need to be pulled out a little more, which will help get the shape you describe.
The cannon looks great! About the nuts and bolts. I dont know if you are planning some close up shots, but you probably wont see them at all. Having said that, I tend to go overboard when it comes too details like this too. Keep on going with your ship!
Thanks, Speedthriller!
I want to do as much detail as I can get away with. I can always make a lower poly version from it if I have to.
Here’s the image I’m using as a reference:
I understand. Great image. Here is another on that might interest you. It shows the differences of the various caliber cannons that were used by the british on these ships.
Thanks again.
I guess I’m modelling the 6 pounder.
This is what I’ve gotten to with the cannon. I’m at a point where I can’t do much more that I’d like to because I didn’t put in the right loop cuts early on, so I will try again. At least the cannon itself is done (easy part!).
I wonder If you ever wanted to continue with this project. It seems good and Sovereign of the Seas is a fine ship so a model of one would be interesting.
Oh wow. You pulled up one of my earliest projects that I had forgotten all about.
That was in the days before I knew how to use most Blender tools and functions. 4 years ago! I struggled so hard back then…
Maybe I should at least try texturing it.
I have 4 or 5 different attempts at doing the ship that don’t look good at all now that I look at them again. Maybe I should try over now that my modeling skills have improved.
