Space Colony (Lights are on so the Beings are Home)

A few monthes ago, I got a rather random looking object playing with
andy “serendipiti” houston and Brendon “Meta-Androcto” Murphy’s Geodesic Domes script

(This script is made for Blender 2.45 yet it has worked without a hitch in my Blender 2.49!)

Thought it might be a RBSO (a Really Big Space Object) so I made a star scape world texture for it.
I remember being pleased how quick and easy it was to make the nebula clouds using Blender’s Cloud Procedural texture.

But making the other textures really slowed me down.
To suggest detail on the RBSO, I used my scan of a clear plastic shopping bag!

Stars were made with the World Buttons panel.
For the nearer stars I used Blender’s Halo buttons. Four of them, one for each corner of a tilted rectangular plane.

To make the lights, (Can you see them?) I made some coloured dots and a stencil mask in GIMP for use in a Blender Image Texture.

Only 4 seconds to render with Blender’s internal (F12) renderer on my AMD Athlon (2 GHz, 1.5 GB of RAM).

Small cheat: For the close ups I found it necessary to adjust the brightness and size of the lights. UV mapping was used but I didn’t do any arranging of the UVs in the UV/Image editor - just left the mess the way it was.

What is it? A space mining colony? A multi generational spaceship made from an asteroid…?

I don’t know!

regards,
frip
