Spaceship docking

Hey there,
after i got the confirmation, that my live tutorial session for the Blender Conference 2024 was approved, i wanted to create a scene for that session.
The tutorial will be about lighting.
With that in mind i have to create a scene which has a clear separation between fore- and background. As i love greebles and space ships, its just another space ship scene

Took the fibonacci spiral as composition guide and blocked out the main volumes in the image.

After that i started with the docking arms, which keep the ship in place and maybe refuel it.

Thats all for now, will work on this thing on the next few days and hope to get it done before the conference

Worked today on the foreground. Mostly using the greeble bits i made in the past.
The image was also way too dark, so i made the sunlight three times as bright.
I will have to have later a look at the materials to match everything to the block out volumes in value.

EDIT: One day later i started working on the ship. Not worthy to bump this thread with this iteration, so i just slap it into this post here.
EDIT2: This seems to bump the thread regardless… something i learned to day, i guess.

Another evening of kitbashing.
I reused a part of a previous space ship i did and cut it apart and rebuild pieces of it for the rear section of the ship.

I am now mostly done with fore/background.
The refuel hose is not yet connected to the ship, i have to see how i will make this work, maybe a flexible tube hanging down to the ship from that rotating arm.
At the end i might add more details and points of interests there. E.g. some cables on the walkway in the top right.

Another short evening session, about two hours more.
This time i worked on the first background element.
Just greebling away and trying to convey a role these elements have.
This time some larger docks with bigger cranes.

The area got much darker than intended, when comparing to the earlier blockout. For now i will just ignore it and greeble the rest of the background, then will fix the values with additional light sources or material changes.

Another evening, another few hours put into it.
I worked on the remaining background elements. Though i am not done with them, as they dont convey the sense of scale yet. They barely look as large as the midground piers, but are so much bigger than that.
Will need another greeble session to fill this void

I then adjusted the lighting and volume to match the rendering to the blockout values i had previously defined. the image should now be much better readable again.
