Spaceship for movie

Hey all,

Here are shots of my spaceship for a movie I’m aiming at making. I’d love tons of c+c please!

Looks good, except that you’ve fallen into that same pit-trap I landed in. Too many vertices are making everything bumpy. Your mesh looks slightly warped and dinged, and your highlights are showing it. You might want to carefully look that over and make sure all your vertices are even.

Did you use the mirror modifier to model the hull? It looks like that the ship isn’t symmetrical (or maybe it’s just me, with the bumpiness it’s hard to tell). If you didn’t, using the mirror modifier will help you create a perfectly symmetrical ship. This way you only need model only half of the hull.

Model in the thickness of your canopy bubble

Thanks for the comments. Keep em coming!

Blackboe: I’ll try evening out the surface. What areas look the most uneven?

Amade: 1. Yes, I used the mirror, modifier for everything except the lightbulbs and the seat.

  1. Since I’ve only been using blender for two weeks, how do you fake glass thickness and make it more realistic?

In love it. I’m not sure if you intended it but it has a very retro “tin toy” look and feel. Personally, I don’t mind the bumpiness - it adds some character and helps it to look a little more real instead of “impossibly perfect”.

You don’t fake it, you model it. I usually just extrude the glass mesh and scale it inwards or outwards, depending on how the glass is shaped. However, this method may not give you a uniform thickness, especially if it isn’t flat or not uniformly shaped (a sphere would result in a uniform thickness, but not an ellipse. Where your pivot point for scaling is will also affect the outcome). If you want uniform thickness you can extrude each face individually but that means you’ll have to reconnect each face manually. I don’t know how others do it though, there may be a more efficient and accurate way of doing it.

@nharron: Manufactured things are quite accurately manufactured. That sort of bumpiness wouldn’t have even left the factory! One way of making things look less perfect is by adding dirt map, textures, etc to make it look weathered a bit. Bump maps can also used to create minor dents and also panelling, rivets, etc.

Here is the updated version of the ship. I changed some stuff as you can see. Please critique.

BTW: how do you do bump mapping? Are there tutorials? thx!

i’m still curious about bump mapping. And, does the new version of the ship look better?

new version looks better. like Mars Attacks!

a good Bump mapping tut is at poopinmymouth.com.
