Spaceship (update 6/9/2004, page 2)

This is for a Star Wars fanfilm. It’s nowhere near done, everything but the front is just placeholder objects that’ll be replaced by better stuff later, but I’d like some harsh critiques and suggestions about what’s there so far.

The shape is original.

Better textures are a given, but after that should look nice.

Looks like it ran into a PS2… not in a bad way, I like the sharp angular style. It looks like a practical design as opposed to something overly stylized. Only negative crit is it reminds me more of a ship from something like Alien than Star Wars but that impression may change as you progress & we see it in some context.

Lots more detail and whatnot.

It looks like you’re going for a lot of detail on this “baby”…

That’s good…

I like it so far…

I’m really curious to see how it’s gonna look like when it’s finished…

The small details looks really good.

On the larger portion of the ship, that is lacking detail, I think the bevels are too large. But you may be fixing that up when you add detail there.

It is original and it is looking very good.

am i detecting an influence of X’s “aeshema” here?

fantastic stuff. looks like you moved some verts near the rear though, and shows up a large tri.

very nice indeed!

Looks awesome!

mystery

I haven’t posted about this in a while, but I’m still working on it…

Yeah, as I said, the undetailed stuff is just placeholder objects.

More an influence of X himself. He’s given me some useful modeling tips.

Yeah, but I’ll fix that later when I actually start working on that part.

Nice update WeirdHat. Keep on going.

As you finish modeling and start putting it into a background, pay close attention to the size-cues that you create; the things that tell the eye, “this thing is huge.”

Camera placement and choice of lens f-stop (use wide-angle) will be important; as will things like light falloff from one end of the model to the other. Depth-of-field would be very nice if you can do it.

All I can say- I hope you created vertex groups if you plan on using lots of procedurals.

It looks good though. Those two face that stick out on the subsurfed part are kind of strange though. Don’t know if thats what you wanted.

The detailed parts on it look great! I can’t wait to see the full ship…
btw: what’s the movie about??

Have you ever seen the Star Wars fanfilms boards at TheForce.net?

With that kind of detail, I wonder how you will tackle texturing. Hell, the front looks almost like it was already textured. Excellent work, and good luck completing this monster.

More details and whatnot. A few people in #BlenderChat have said they don’t like the overall shape of it, but nobody could tell me exactly what they thought was wrong about it. Can any of you guys put it into words maybe?

Yeah, thanks. Good tips.

I’m not telling you yet. For suspense, and in case I don’t finish it.

I hang out there all the time.

Yeah, me too, heh. Texturing’s not my strong point.

Wow, nice detail, very nice ship.

You asked to put the feeling about the overal shape into words, I think I cant do that exactly, but it has to do something with the length/wight ratio, or the higt/weight ratio. I thing adding some wing like structures to the ship will do alot cause you increase the wight with that.

I hope you understand what I mean.

<edit> I think espacially the height/wight ratio is doing the job. The ship is to high, to massive, compared to the wight of the ship. Maybe adding some big holes in the ship will do good too(the ship will be have a less masive look than).
