Spartan soldier

Hello everyone!

This is a project I started last monday, and I finished today.
I wanted the warrior to look like a Spartan one, cuz it was looking great in my head before I start
Ok, in my head there was also fire and awesome effects but that’s another story :stuck_out_tongue:

Crits are welcome, don’t hesitate to hurt me, otherwise I won’t get better!
Thank you

I’m assuming you intended it to have a low-poly look, and if so, it turned out nicely. =) I would recommend making the whole thing look low poly, though. I might take out the smooth shading on the helmet and cut down on the shield resolution. I think the dragon is the biggest weakness. It’s fine overall, but it looks a little weird without legs, and the wings are too blurry in my opinion. Other than that, this is a good render.

Thank you for the critiques Owldude!
Indeed, I’m a big fan of low poly and I almost never model using subsurf
About the helmet and the shield, I tryed to keep them low poly but reflections due to glossiness were horrible (maybe a lighting problem?)

‘the dragon is the biggest weakness’
You are totally right, next time I will make one, I will spend a lot more time on the modeling and on the motion blur effect!
I will keep everything u said in mind, thx again :stuck_out_tongue:

Actually most of history’s so called greatest artists were their own greatest critics. In fact many of history’s most famous works of art were actually the works the artist himself hated the most.

At the same time it is also quite common throughout history that an artist is rather unappreciated in his own generation only to have his works become some of the most highly sought after in subsequent generations.

Yep I see what u mean atr1337
A chance for me I do not aim to be a famous artist remembered for decades.
Making nice illustations would be enough for me.

As I am never happy with what I do, I ask the community to help me by saying me what’s wrong :stuck_out_tongue:
I also think everyone should ask for critiques, even the greatest one, instead of being self-sufficient.

I have nothing against critiques myself, the point is that a person need not feel obligated to agree with a particular critique. Moreover whomever it is dishing out the critique would do well, in my personal opinion, to understand that he is not the end all be all of beauty. In reality any given critique can only speak for one’s own opinion, but not for the whole. As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

“Beauty in things exists merely in the mind which contemplates them.” -David Hume (Moral and Political)

Moreover I find there is a line to be drawn between critique and criticism, where exactly that line lay is probably a matter of opinion I’m sure. In my opinion it’s one thing to say I like this or I don’t care for that, but saying this is right and this is wrong is, in and of itself, incorrect. Is it right for the human being to be repulsed by feces and wrong for the dung beetle to be attracted to feces?

Edit: Just because a person is more experienced, just because a person’s work is more widely accepted doesn’t mean that his or her opinion is more accurate than any other. There are a lot of people in this world with a dizzying array of likes and dislikes. If we are all to try and appeal to the greater number of those people then the minority will always be left out.

Wow, I have to confess It was quite hard for me to undertsand you since I’m not an English native speaker.
You write too well for me  But I get it, somehow.
Of course when I’m asking for critiques, I am expecting critiques that everyone could acquiesce, but it doesn’t mean someone’s personal opinion is not important as it helps to understand how different from you people see what you have done

I understand your point, I suppose it’s not merely this thread or this forum that I take issue with when it comes to critique, but am probably just bitter over what I see the ‘establishment’ doing to people. Television shows such as American Idol or Face/Off tend to upset me when I see tears streaming down the faces of wonderful and talented artists belittled by arrogant and beligerant professionals.

I feel that the establishment tries to teach the student to be in-human, tries to teach the student to reject any pain that is only human to feel when in reality the problem lies not with the human, but with an establishment that would reject that which makes us human. Try not to change the person, but instead the way we treat them. Try not to build the human being around our ideal, but instead build our ideal around the human being.

If you want to sing and you believe you can sing then let none stand in your way. By all means sing.

Edit: American Idol advertises that they make dreams come true, never mind the fact that they stomped on the dreams of a hundred other people just to make one person’s ‘dream’ come true with the industry’s worst contract. They don’t make dreams come true, they make nightmares come true. Their job is to tear peoples hearts out to the sound of a roaring audience.

Rome never gave up the practice of gladiator battles, only the manner in which the people are executed has changed. Now a thousand years after Rome we look back at them like they were monsters. What will people think of us a thousand years from now I wonder.

How stupefying, such a profound thought transmitted by mentioning the American Idol show!
I 100% understand you, so just let’s say my request was totally innocent, even if, out of this tread or this forum, I 100% agree with you :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t mean to imply that I thought your request wasn’t totally innocent, merely commenting on where the statement lead my thought process I suppose. For the record you speak english beautifully. I myself am not at all multi-lingual unless you count programming languages

Well, I suppose I am multi-lingual if you consider the ability to see things from the point of view of others. That is I speak democrat, republican, anarchist, christian, buddhist, etcetera

Edit: Capitalist, Socialist, Communist
Male, female, heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, monogamist, polygamist, Native American (one of my personal favorites), logical, creative, leader, follower, conspiracy theorist, skeptic, scientist, the list goes on

“Well, I suppose I am multi-lingual if you consider the ability to see things from the point of view of others.”
A learned person I’d say

Thank you anyway!
