Specularity of a UV Texture

Hello, I have a question about setting the specularity of an object that has been UV mapped. I have tried using materials after UV Mapping, but then the UV Map dissapears in the game engine. I have tried using TexFace in the materials tab, no ado. I think I am going about this all wrong. A wild stab in the dark would tell me that I would need to VertexPaint, but that’s just what it is - a wild stab in the dark. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
