Speed up Cycels Rendering

I think I have my render settings messed up. I ma trying to render a simple scene for some research I am doing. I’ve attached a sample output to this message. It consists of three scenes rendered separately and composited together in the fourth scene. Right now, for just the marble maze scene, it takes 6 seconds to render a frame. Playing with the settings, I can get that down to 5, but that’s about it. For such a simple scene, Attached are 2 screen shots showing my render settings. They are identical for the other scenes. I’m thinking something may be wrong with my system setup since I tried the bwm27 benchmark, and it takes 4:14.51 minutes on my GPU. The author of that file takes less than 2 minutes with a similar GPU. I’m not sure where the hangup might be.

System Specs
CPU: AMD Phenom
4GM system ram
GPU: Nvidia 750 Ti w/ 2GB Ram (running PCI 2e)
OS: Debian Sid
Blender Version: 2.77

I think this must be my setup, because it renders slightly faster on a mobile Core i7 2nd gen (and only 4 cores, not 8) with no GPU (except the one built into the processor) and 4GB of ram.

Your rendering a scene with Cycles, that means light has to be calculated and you render this in FullHD! I mean, four seconds, that´s nothing! (with GTX750 and 8 GB RAM all of my renderings took more than 20 Minutes per frame)
But for that simple scene you could use Blender Internal as well, that´s much faster than Cycles.
