This is my entry into the 3-hour challenge on a Danish 3d forum this week.
There will be NO ADDED DETAILS because it’s a competition, so final is final.
It’s in grey’s only because its a Speed-modelling compo (not speed finish)
so no textures either
It’s rendered & modelled with the latest Blender 2.40 alpha1.
The whole boom-box is one big mesh, but the buttons are individual.

The speaker grills (grates?) are really easy to make, it’s a little
trick:
First extrude and separate the part you wish to become a grill…
when separated…flatten the subsurf-modifier so the mesh gets more
details…perhaps with 3-4 subsurfs or so…lot’s of details.
select the whole mesh (a) in face mode.
extrude individual faces
now…here’s the sweet trick… while the extruded individual faces are still selected - press alt + S for “shrink/fatten” and shrink the individual faces
until they become…like a grid…
extrude again…to get some depth.
Now finally…delete the selected faces (x) (faces only!)
Voila…easy grill! The neat thing about this trick ,is that it works everywhere
and on literally any shape, so you can create complex grids this way.
I’m interested in some of the things you said too. I’m not sure what you mean by the model being all one mesh except the buttons. Don’t you say that you separate the grill from the rest of the mesh? Could you post some intermediary pics of the grill process?
@Artaures - it simply means make the modifier real (apply it to the mesh…it becomes a permanent change to the mesh instead of an modifier).
@lakcaj - Yes you’re right, of course. All loose parts are separate, but the
boombox itself with all it’s holes/shapes, etc…is one big mesh.
The Grill process is - really really easy, just make a plane…select all the
faces, extrude individual faces and delete faces…you should be stuck
with a “grill”. real easy!
