Spherical noise? Noise along normals?

Usually the noise function only distorts the object along the local Z-axis.

Is it possible to move the vertices along the normals with the noise function, or move them away from the center or the cursor?

Maybe it can be done by mapping the texture differently onto the object?

look for A.N.T. - another noise tool. a very useful script that does exactly what you want. interactively.

You could also use displacement for this, the result only appears in the render though.
