spotlight halo

does anyone know if you can make a spotlight halo pass through a plane with a cloud texture so it breaks up into diffrent beams
i have the alpha set to 0 on the plane and samples up on the spot light
i have done it before with a mesh object just fine ,but i cant get to work with alpha mapped textures , i dont know if its even posible
