Squash/Stretch with Scale Manipulator?

I’ve been trying to learn Blender off and on for a while now, being pretty well-versed in Max, Softimage and Maya. The transition is utterly brutal…

I was pretty sure I found a way to do this a month or so again but for the life of me can’t figure out how to do it again.

I’m trying to perform a volume preserving scale on an object with the scale manipulator. So for instance, I click-drag to increase the scale on the x-axis, while automatically decreasing the scale on the y and z-axis.

Like this:

The best I can figure is (shift + alt + drag manipulator) to manipulate two axes at once, but that’s not what I want.

Is there a way to do this in Blender or am I crazy?

Not that I know of. I know that you can hit S to scale and then Shift+Y,X or Z to constrain it from scaling on that axis. Maybe that can help out in conjunction with doing Shift+Alt?

Well dang, that’s a bummer. Thanks for the reply, though. Maybe the Custom Manipulator/Wiggly Widgets project will make it possible when it’s released?
