I love the SSS effect but my computer is way too slow to load it. Is there any way I could get the same effect without using SSS?

Nope, you should get a new computer.
No, not the same effect. Certain combinations of material specs and textures might come close to the look, but that would probably slow your computer just as much. SSS in 2.59 (and I assume 2.6) is much faster and more efficient than earlier, I’m surprised your comp has trouble with it, unless it’s a real coal-burner.
Yep… defiantly a coal burner… 2GB RAM. I’m surprised blender even runs on this computer. But thank you, I will defiantly take this into consideration. Thank you for your time.
