Combination of Matte Painting for background/horizons, textures for details, and actual models set up with lighting and composited to look like the film images that was taken. Also, a lot of artists working diligently to contribute to the realization of George Lucas’ vision.
But in the real versions prior to CG, they just glued stuff together and called it good
What Craigomatic said…it’s not all modelled, a lot of it is painted and then composited. Also, it does look good in the movie but that does not necessarily mean that it looks good for real…
