Stargate But not What your thinking of

Im making a a stargate, but not from SG1.
I have for projects going on as of now so updates might be a little slow. Iv got this, http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=68217, this, http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=67679, another prjects which i dont plan to post on here yet, and now this.
It mainly based on the design of the door on the cover of the KOTOR1 manual for Xbox (dont know abut other platforms) i was tidying my room and found the manual. i looked at it and thought what an awesome thing to model. im planning a scene for it but i wont give details incase i dont get to do it.

so here it is. C+C welcomed.

Thanks

Cool! I don’t know what this is about with XBOX and all, but it does look like a Stargate!

ok iv been busy the last couple days so i havnt had chance to update. iv managed to model the door guards plus some more extras. I think im practicaly done with the model enless anyone can think of anything else to add to it.

C+C much appreciated:)

Nothing to crit on as far as I can see, looking good  Though (I’m not sure if this is part of the design or not) but the stairs leading down from it look average… maybe have them brancginh off at an angle?
Eg:

Get what I mean? (Yeah, I know it was pointless to go into detail about such a small thing… i’m avoiding studying for exams)

Now you ned to texture it, and then animate it. Also, make a procedural texture background (probably clouds) and animate the background texture.

iv changed the stairs as Trexilence suggested. iv also added a control panel. iv given my portal thing a temporary plain red texture just do i can see where it is and so it stands out from the rest of my model. how do you make a procedural texture? Tynach im loving the stargate your making btw:)

i prefer this design to the other ones, maybe just because ive seen the other “original” one alot, but wither way, this looks really good.

ok iv started work on the textures. i dont plan for this to be clean but rarther very dirty and i will be adding rust to it. im leavng the vortex as plain red for now until the rest of it is done.

almost finished texturing the actuall gate. only the control panel and the vortex left

This is looking nice and detailed.
Only real thing is that the white part seems too bright compared to the rest of the image. Maybe consider dirtying it up a little?

I did a modifier wave and a cloud procedural texture with displacement mapping.

I also had a lot of tweaked settings, and for the specularity I had a light that was set only to affect objects on it’s layer, with the event horizon (the actual “Vortex,” as you call it) the only thing in that layer besides the lamp. I made the lamp in a position opposite of the camera, in such a way that if the event horizon were reflective, the light would be in the middle. (because of that I can’t animate a fly-through without a lot of pain.) I also had a halo texture affecting the Add effect only, for the glow in the middle.

The only crit I have on what you have is that you’re cloud textures aren’t as good as possible… To fix this, go to the settings and make the depth 6, the highest depth setting. What this does is it makes it more detailed… two is default, three is twice as detailed as two, four is twice as detailed as three, and so on… so 6 is 32 times the detail, if my calculator is correct.

ok due to my stupidity jake got confused. the white and yellow parts are supposed to be light. iv had to change all the parts to halos. iv also changed the cloud textures to depth 6. im going to start on the vortex / event horizon.

OH MANN!! Love the gate!! you rules!!

By the way… The last picture… try to add a glow effect on it

oh hey…little crit; the texture on the stairs need some work… an some of the other textures to… seems a bit strange…

Iv started working on the vortex. thanks Silverframe. if your wondering why the textures are a bit urgh is because im aiming it to be very dirty n very used and neglected.
i know the vortex is far from perfect, in fact its far from good. any tips? not on what i need to do but how i should do it.

I like your design, although the textures on the stairs and some other places seems to be stretched out. I believe this is what Silverframe was talking about. You can fix that by going under materials and clicking the Map Input tab. There you will find sizeX, sizeY, and sizeZ. Change those around till you get the result you want.
