Stargate

I was wondering why some posters I saw had inacurate gates… Now I know.

I decided to try modelling the arches instead of bump-mapping. So far I have one arch outlined, this is to be spin-duped.

You have any pictures that shows the number of arcs? (goes to search for one)

Unfortunately no, I’m just going to mess with the spin-dup number until my model pretty much matches my background image. Actually, I may be able to study the pic I used to determine the number of rectangles and see if I can find any relationships… Anyhoo, if that pic doesn’t help, all is not lost, like I said, I can just use my background image.

[Edit] AAAAAAAAAAAAH! The picture I took and posted in your thread seems to suggest 2 arches for every 1 rectangle, for 312 arches. Blender won’t let me put any more than 180!:eek::frowning:

[Edit 2] I would appreciate help on this, this is a MAJOR obstacle. (Unless I want to duplicate and hand rotate the arch 312 times…)

Model two arcs by hand rotating around the cursor (cursor snapped to grid in the middle) and spin dup that 156 times, exactly half of the 312 times needed otherwise. Does that help?

Oh. Yes, that would work. Boy do I feel stupid for freaking out like that.:o

Nah, I just did it… I’m going to post my results pretty soon.

Hello, I was just wondering what you used for your event horizon… this isn’t the first SG model I’ve read up on with the same problem, and most people end up using displacement mapping, I can throw together a quick model of the event horizon in a few minutes with it, it renders WAY faster than most other ways too…

I used a blue colored circle mesh with five procedural wood textures set to effect “nor”. Animation was done by animating the Z offset value for all five texture layers. In other words I used bump-mapping.

I have been watchen you guys and the gates are lookin good. I to am a fan of the show. your work inspired me. I wanted to share my event horizon blend( notice the expertly modeled gate:D )

its still WIP but I think it looks good so far.
if you dont like me posting images in your thread just let me know

no ray trace it renders faster and I think it looks better.
the blend is close to the last with some tweeks

Try to make it a darker blue with the blue you have now in the middle. And get the cocentric circular bumps. Also, you need more specular mapping, and harder specular mapping.

the stargate is actually almost purple… BUT OMFG THAT IS ONE OF THE BEST WATER MATERIALS I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! OMFG!!!

Now… yea that is what i meant LOTR fan except I set it to Displacement, nor works fine for a head on angle, but if you want to show it from all sides displacement is probably better… downside is u have to subdivide it a lot and then subsurf etc. makes for large meshes, and yea u got the animation thing too… I used a stucci texture instead of a lot of wood textures… either one works I suppose lol

edit: i forgot, the SG has a lot of glow too, easily added by the “glow” (tricky I kno) effect in the video sequencer…

I agree that it is a nice water material, however I don’t think it is a good event-horizon material. Look at some of the pictures I took from my TV earlier in the thread. My material has a spec value of 2 and a hard value of 300. This seems to work ok. I made it “glow” by setting the emit value to one, as well as adding a blue halo to a single vertex placed just in front of the horizon. If you’re going to be working on this for a while you may even want to start your own thread.

[Edit] I may actually mess around with displacement too…

Agreed, it’s a wonderfull water texture, but it does not look like the event horizon.

just a point about your “glow”… the “glow” effect is a completely different kind of glow than emit… emit just makes things brighter whereas the glow effect actually gives it a more glow look like on the show… I really recommend trying it.

Actually, when used with radiosity, emit will actually add light, making it a good technique to use instead of your Glow effect… of course, I think it would be the absolute best to use both…

This texture is really good for water, indeed.

But for a stargate, I’d use a spot light in front of the event horizon and a mirroring effect. For the glow effect, maybe an additional hemi, half the size of the event horizon could do something, in conjunction with the emit setting. I’ve not tried it, through, just an idea for you.

started my own thread
I made some progress.

thanks

Tynach, I just finished modelling the groove part that should be pulled back. Now I just need to figure out a way to make those faces between the center outline and the main outline… I tried just selecting everything and then Shift+F, but that didn’t turn out the way it should have. Suggestions, anyone?

[Edit] NM, I’m making edges and filling manually.
