starting a new link when editing

You know how you can move the cursor over a vertice and press l to select all linked vertices. Usually the linked vertices are all part of a conecting mesh, except for when you use intersect or radiosity replce mesh data. When editing how do I switch to a new link, so if I add more vertices or extrude them, it won’t be in the same linked group as the existing vertices?

The L key is just for selecting connected verts. If you wish to create your own groups of verts you would have to use vertex groups instead. The creation and use of vertex groups is sxplained in the online docs at www.blender.org
