thank you @pixelmass i don’t use installers for this reason
but for this it still tries to be ‘helpful’, eh!?
i like control over where things go and indeed for this,
USB stick is exactly why i will use it, for the short
intro blender courses i lead. this is much more elegant
than what i have been doing. great for the desktop too :o

PS some of the graphicall builds were placing the
config folder in the blender program folder like this. i guess
it is a toss up between the control freak and retaining
settings for a new installation.ws
Yey! I just upgraded to 2.59 and used the same technique. It runs on my machine as well as off a usb stick! I am happy about this!

if we set up the /config folder before first run of blender
it will not save a folder at […] \Blender Foundation\Blender[Version Number]\config
this issue created such a todo on networked and passworded computers
which i used for a course
as i said this is a useful and elegant workaround.
