I don’t really know why the Blender Foundation remade the whole particle system again. I was trying to do clouds, but the hair particles looks too much like hair, and the emitter can’t be made static .
Does anyone know how i can make particle clouds in Blender 2.46?
If the hair looks like hair, it seems everything is good and well :eyebrowlift2:
But you should be more specific, what kind of clouds you would like to achieve. If you speak of clouds like clouds in the sky, particles are not necessarily the best solution.
This technique uses meshes:
But true volumetric are the key for easy and good looking clouds, and that is not necessarily related to the particle system.
Again, I want to jump in and have my say, but please let me know if I’m putting my foot in my mouth or putting words in someone else’s mouth.
It is my understanding that the particle system as implemented in 2.46 functions as it does because the developer(s) (Jahka and anyone else that may have helped), believed that it is an improvement over the old way of doing things. Either that, or that there are more advantages than there are drawbacks, so in the end the new way comes out better. Oh, and they used them to make a movie called Big Buck Bunny. It is pretty good. Check it out if you have the time: http://www.BigBuckBunny.org
As it has already been said, if you are going for photorealistic clouds, true volumetrics are probably the best way I’ve heard of to recreate them in 3D. Right now, Blender doesn’t currently have volumetric capabilities (correct me if I’m wrong). An intrepid developer in Cuba who goes by the name farsthary is working on implementing True Volumetrics as part of his thesis and the progress can be tracked at this link: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1135020
If you want very good simulated clouds, you may want to try Alan’s Cloud Generator Script. It was having some issues with the 2.46 Release Candidates, but the developer (I’m guessing his name is Alan) may have sorted them out by now. Here’s a link: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=118973
If you want halo cartoonish clouds that function the same as static particles in 2.45, you may try setting your particle system type to “Emitter” and under the Visualization tab, press the “Unborn” and “Died” buttons. And to make sure they stay still, leave all the values under “Initial Velocity” and “Global Effects” at zero.
Let us know if you have any luck! I really like clouds, so I’m interested to see your results!
