One of the design problems with the steam engine is the piston lubrication. Locomotive piston gets pushed back and forth with steam on both ends! It is a closed chamber. How do you lubricate that? Well, what they do is to add some oil in steam. So steam that is coming out of locomotive is dirty and must be dumped. Exhausting the steam into smoke stock helps with pulling air into the firebox.
