Steamships

Numerous routes made - considering what to do. To continue First I will need to make a list of all the routes I have made available for download.

Amended
01032020
There are 58 that I downloaded from completed and work in progress pages, some might be corrections, etc.

Also a few still on memory stick, Isle of Man I think and a few others. As things stand, I will probably put further route making on hold for the time being.

I have no idea what to do for the best and if there is any interest whatsoever !?

.Solway Firth and 3 routes with 5 ports.
Movement uses 1 to 9 keys. Mainly just 1 or few.
The routes will start from Silloth.
See readme in route.

01silloth01steam19022020.zip (3.5 MB)

Maryport - see readme
02maryport20022020.zip (3.6 MB)

02maryport23022020.zip (3.4 MB)

I have replaced the sand with grass which makes the scene for realistic.
This new section will include many of the previous routes uploaded but will probably have alterations of one sort and another.
This version of Marport has key 1 opening the dock gates and moving the steamship from dock 1 to dock 2.
Key 2 shows the ship ready for ‘launching’ and ‘towed’ backwards from the ‘shipyard’ around to the main dock for fitting out.

Yes I am quite pleased with the work I am doing in this new section and how versatile Blender 2.79b is or could be for making realistic simulations within the linmits of 5 meg maximum!

All routes of course are free.
Terms are simple use at your own risk.
Not for commercial use.

Time approx. from 600 seconds to 2500 for the different routes although they might differ.

Workington top of route dock - Three distant steam-ships - two enter through dock gates. One enters the open dock. keys 1,2,3,

Harrington middle dock - One steam-ship moves from inner to outer dock. key 4.

Whitehaven dock bottom of route - one ship manoeveurs from the open dock through two sets of dock gates into dock in corner. The second ship has quite a long journey along the coast to the Workington dock at the beginning of the route. I set this to approx 2500 seconds. keys 5,6,

Some routes maybe just one key, others may use a few keboard keys to set them into motion.
Roaming camera is home/end/arrow keys.
Esc to leave.

Summary

I have downloaded the 4 routes I uploaded yesterday and they all seem to be OK and can’t see any missing textures at present.
If the route does not start with key P, just left click window. It must be in object mode. Another way click tab game/start game emgine.

If the routes do not load for any reason you would need to explain the details for me to see what the problem is.

Lengthy pause for now as the solitary mariner is waiting to see if any other solitary mariners are on the high seas of Blender.
The sailors are constantly scanning the distant horizon but so far nothing on these forums. The sailors themselves all seem to be from differnt eras of time itself. Very Strange.

B

Animations and ship movements 1,2,3, etc
Any scenarios will be detailed in the readme.
Each route zip size will be below 5 meg or up to 5 meg (also includes all textures). Route size depends on what the routes are, as all are already made up to Lands End. Some routes might have a few versions, some routes might be basic.

Using only Blender 2.79b as it has all the required functions that I ned to make reasonable maritime routes. Most important is is available for download from the Blender Archives.

If reading this outside these forums you do not need to know how to use Blender but it is required to open the Blend file (the route).

All routes are free.
Terms Use at your own risk - Not for commercial use.
Routes, details, dates, descriptions and content might be approximate or include gueswork.

Finally
My thanks to the Blender forums Management.

Barry

We will see if there is any interest in animated transport as so far I don’t know of any other simulations on these forums. If there are I would be grateful if you could mention the details with a link. They would need to be free like my own routes

I am not sure myself whether to continue as the solitary old mariner as it is becoming a bit boring. There are plenty of functions in 2.79b to enable interesting routes to be created I would imagine on land, sea and air. Also mining, windmills, and mediaeval or ancient cities to be explored (Carcassone, smile).

Also under he sea such as submarines, wrecks to explore and many other things. I would imagine trams could fairly easily be made, with routes created with the logic bricks.

It would be interesting to see if any others could create some interesting transport routes for me to explore. Free of course.

The routes that could be made are endless as far as I can see and the functions are in 2.79b, and the good point is that it is available from the Blender Archives which is very important.

I am not sure about UPBGE as it would need to be also available easily as a permanent feature over the years.

Could trams be made to follow paths? It is easy enough using the timeline for boats but my knowledge is very limited. The rails can also be added after the tracks are laid. Perhaps somebody who has explored 2.79b well, could make an example of working trams, trains, and the rest of the world. (smile). They don’t need to be too complex or artistic if simulations

I replaced my previous post here as was too negative.

Barry

A reply to my own posts by myself summarises how to continue.
Past Ages and Bygone times is what it is all about using ‘Blender’ to create a pretend glmpse of the bygone times. The past in my opinion is just as important as the spec of time we now live in.

About 1800 seems about right for the era with the distant industrial ages still to come. Any later and the complexity of route making becomes impossible as regards trying to include a tiny glimpse of any realism. I have shown that coastal cargo ships and docks can easily be created but not suitable for the era I have chosen.

So what next. the UK has a few thousand miles of coastline and many complex river sytems. Horses pullled the barges along 2000 miles of canals for over a century. So I will use what is already made about 50 seperate routes with different versions. Some basic and others wtih some work on them.

The starting point is always the Solway Firth with Scotland on the North side and England on the south side, then follow the coast and include any interesting detours form the main coastline.

The routes are up to or below 5 megabye including all textures. For my routes the will follow on after this post It would be useful to me if people who download could confirm if each route loads and runs OK, on laptops or tablet computers, especially laptops. All content made with 2.79b Blender which has all that is required to make these simulations, and most important it is available for download from the Blender archives!

Barry

We start with the Solway Firth upper reaches with the two rivers that feed into it. Terms are not for commercial use! - use at your own risk!
The river is the the river Eden and the village or hamlet is Rockcliffe. There were no piers as the nature of the river bed is rocky. However I have added a jetty and one drivable sailing-flat. Made a few alterations to the original route.

The next route is Annan on the other side of the Solway Firth in Scotland.I selected one of the variations I made, with three vessels on preset tracks and barge hull launched down slope.

Key 1 starts the sailing flat and schooner. One on way to the stone quays and other to the wood piers.
Key 2 starts the distant schooner on its way to the wood piers.
key 3 'launches; the barge hull.

Should anybody on these forums be interested in creating animations ofship movements in real life many are shown on the link to the ais site.
As these forums only seem to specialise in small games, static art, cartoon films etc,I have no idea whether to continue posting or not as I seem to be the only one making interactive routes and these sort of routes are about discussion. Similar to the forums for trains, flight, etc.?

Due to the preference on these forums, mainly small games, static art, cartoons, etc, and little to no interest in real life and relevant simulations I may only make further occasional maritime routes available from time to time. B

Occasional routes maybe but difficult. Sailing ships use a lot of vertices and coastal steamships would use only a fraction. Sailing ships I can make drivable which does not work with coastal vessels. Larger routes can be made but many subdivides need of selected areas to work on.

I have come to the conclusion that interest for real life simulations is pratically nil on these forums. Seems like a waste of Blender to me, but that is the way most forum members seem to want it so no place for me if little or no interest and no discussion, hardly a mention if they load and run OK.

So I don’t wish to waste my time further in creating real life maritime routes for download all up to or below 5 meg of varying size from about 15 km to 40km.
If running any of the routes they are

I am now unlikely to check thread for posts

barry - people here make games - just like you - and many are quite busy.

people attract attention to their projects using gifs - graphics - gameplay video etc.
and there are quite a few out there now ( creating is starting to take off)

if you want more traffic you have to cater to the end user a bit more - and try and make it intresting.

like for instance there are wildly successful simulation games about war / pirates / even sim city type games just based on survival/ city building.

for us - the fun comes in the making of the game - so maybe make tools that make generating these routes / editing them dead simple and beautiful
?

find a niche.

I read through your post and it seems to me it reads as a lecture and non of what you say is relevant.
I have use Blender on and off for about 18 years.
I know exactly what people make in Blender as I have made basic content in Blender over many years.
I made routes and content for Trainz train simulator, Virtual Sailor amd started with Stentec sail simulator adbout 18 years ago…
I do NOT make games but simulations following around the UK coastline and made about 50 routes covering about quarter of the coastline. Routes are based ot srtm2 satellite data, using 3dem for height map and displacement function make a reasonable greyscale map using 3dem.

Incidentally people can alter or do what they like with my routes except not for commercial used. Use at your own risk.
I used simple methods and my routes are all UNDER 5 MEGABYTE including textures and all are downloadable from Blender pages.
If you want games you include scenarios within the route. There are some in some of the routes.
Routes are based on srtm2 data. I created as simple method to make ships and boats floating and drivable by offsetting the collision box with collsion box around the sea.

There are NO simulations on these forums as I have asked many times to make a link so I could explore them.

So considering everything IF people were interested in true to life simulations it would take about a single minute to download any of the routes I have made 50 or so! I have no interest in creating an interest as these simulations are about the past ages and bygone times! If people have any interest at all they would spend 1 minute to download a route.

There are NO true to life simulations on these forums as far as I know!
This post however is just academic as I have no further interest in these forums in their present format as I explained in my post !

Reply crossed with your post.
Thanks though for previous interest.

Post amended in parts.
I think it’s a graet pity as even Blender 2.79b has enough functions to make varying simulations or many types. Using instancing Alt plus D complex routes can be made with numerous ships housing quays and everything else.
As mentione it would need approx half a dozen members to download and run routes confirming if they load and run OK.

Then I would be interested again making FREE routes

I am making tools to make any sort of thing you desire actually

you can use your heightmap data from google maps as a look up table for when it generates the new patches (unvisited) -> pin objects to it - soon even absorb multiple objects to be drawn as 1.

I will continue with the route making but will return to the threads I have in the completed games/simulations section. I will carry on alomg the coastline. It will take a while to sort it all out.

With the completed game/simulation section there is no need for discussion except for the occasional brief posts. e,g. if routes not loading, missing texures, etc, etc. Some routes will aready have screenshots.

I think that will now be the best option after exploring the different options.
My thanks or course for the previous help. Before there were two sides to the equation and in the finished section I can concentrate on making reasonable routes, easy to download and based on true to life terrain etc using srm2 and 3DEM which still seems to workOK, touch wood after about 20 years.
Many Thanks. Whether people are downloading or not equation will vanish in THE completed section and won’t affect the future route making and laready completed routes.

Barry

I will probably make a link back to the completed section when I begin the sorting out ‘again’ of the routes. checking they run OK and maybe try embedded scenarios in more of the routes.

All routes will be made with 2.79b as it has everything I need to make reasonable maritime routes. zip file size of routes will be at or under 5 megabyte, including textures.
The numbers 1 to 9 will start any animations included and ships movements.

I will only be posting on the completed section and creating a new page section 3 to follow on from section 2 page -
maritime downloads - coastal staemaships - section 3.

Ships will start from Solway Firth - Routes will only have a brief description - To correct any problems you would need to post - such as missing textures, not loading etc, for me to rectify the problem. I think this is the best solution. I will make this the last post on this section except I will make a link to the new page when I make it.
