stencil texturing

hi everyone,

I came over this tutorial:
http://feeblemind.tuxfamily.org/dotclear/index.php/2005/02/27/16-didacticiel-usage-des-masques-de-textures—tutorial-using-texture-stencils
and find it pretty useful, except that it totally confused me concerning channels. I understand that that texture channels are something like layers and go on top of each other. The firts one is at the bottom, the next goes on top of it and so on. But when i used masks it seemed like it was the other way around with them…
I made a little test… I created 4 maps (only colors for clearness) from dark blue (which i then put to the lowest channel) to white and i used 3 masks that i put between them. The Mask_left in between the 1st and 2nd channel, the mask_middle in between the 2n and 3rd…

with this settings…

According what i think how it should be that the white map that is all the way up above all others should have hole in it from the mask_right and through the hole in it one should see part of the map beneeth which is lite_blue with the part of the hole that goes to the middle blue. The third mask shoul not be visible at all…The actual result is somewhat different …that the mask_left “beats” all others even though it is at the bottom…
It might sound little confusing but i hope that the pictures explain it well…

This is the result…can u please shed some light on thi matter?

Thank you!!!

Stencils work by the black area stops the following texture from effecting the previous texture.so the parts you want to show through all layers has to go at the top.

i probably dont quite understand…how come that you can see the map from the first channel , when there are other layers to hide it??? Can you be more specific please?

Ok to compare it to a real world situation take a pice of card and spray paint it all over (texture 1), let that dry, add some masking tape in some areas (stencil 1), paint another colour (texture 2) let dry and add some more masking tape (stencil 2) and another colour (texture 3), pull off all the masking tape.

thanx!!! that is where was my fault…i was virtually removing masks after each masking, now it is clear…it is removed after all of the masks are sprayed…gerat! than you man…:stuck_out_tongue:
