Stereoscopy with one single image

I tried to make a stereoscopic picture out of only one picture and it’s z-values… and succeeded. The picture and some more information is available on my new website:

Only the last picture was made with that technique… so you need to scroll down a bit.

Woah those images are pretty cool! the potral looks freakin awsome in 3D! equally impressive to the 3D effect is that you managed to get the effect with only one image for that stacked cube render

Can you share a blend file with the node setup? I’m really quite interested, and tried getting it working via the node setup you have on the picture, but I’m hitting a brick wall.

I have wondered how movies shot single cam get re-rendered out stereo (like new Alice in Wonderland?). Could you reshoot Durian with this technique, accessing Z values (saved seperately) but rendering from original media?

I’m not sure I understand the ezplanation, and I prefer the strands experiment.

PS I love that stereo suzane experiment.

Theoretically, but I don’t think the z-values - cut like the original movie - will be available. Furthermore I haven’t tested this technique on any other image, yet. I think the images, which are produced that way look all a little blurry, unless you don’t have a better displace node. And transparent faces are also a problem. Rendering a second time is always better, than using post processing… it does only cost time. But this technique could become useful, when things need to be rendered in real time (e.g. in games).

There you go, but be aware that I have some strange node setup just to arrange the two pictures next to each other.

thanks a lot for the file! Time to play!

Very clever system. Very interesting. Great work !
