Still image + 3 D object

I have created a small 3D object and want to over lay and shade it onto a still image. I use the Nodes.

Render layer to bottom image on Alpha Over,

Single image to Top image connector on Alpha Over, Then Alpha over to Composite

When I hit render it just shows the gray outline then the 3D image of the box. with out my picture in the back ground. resolution is set to that of the picture (1920 x 1080)

What exactly is your question here?
Use the scale node for the bg image to scale it to render size.
If it’s the gray outline that bothers you, then go to the shading panel, change the mode from sky to alpha, and then connect the alpha from the render layer to the fac value in alpha over node.
If it doesn’t look “realistic” then you simply need to work on lighting, enable more passes (shading, AO, etc) and then give compositing another go.

In the render tab under film, tick transparent, then use a mix node instead of a alpha over. That should do you.

well to start with I render the image it shows the cube with the gray out line and this is it. I cannot get the the bg image to show at all. When I try to change from sky to Alpha it is grayed out and I cannot click it.

Ohkin - I cant find any render tab with film.

Its via the 3d view render tab. you will have to rerender the cube.

In the image you actually uploaded, in the render panel under ouput heading.
Tick the box that says RBGA.
The option is visible in your image
