Stone texturing + Planet texture

i tried the new planet texture and did some experiment to get some stone’s faces
and see results

this new planet texture does offer new texturing in 2.5 and does give interesting stone’s faces

Some of those could become really nice if further worked with.
There certainly is potential to use this for stones

Did you yet try volume stuff?

not certain about volume
i did one but volume is more or less like translucent so it’s more complicated
but i know one example for doing a tiger stone which use Volume and it’s very beautifull!
but not with planet texture

so i guess it can be use but requires some works and experimentation

if other people find other better texture please share it with us and we might built a sort of library for this new material before it comes out in 2.5!

happy 2.5

I told you, it might work for a planet’s cloudy atmosphere. I might do another experiment later, after my first one went so badly…

here is a tiger eye stone i think
that was done a few months back with only volume and texture

see pic

second pic here i generated some more pure volume rectangular shape stone
with only volume texturing

That tiger eye looks amazing
Now if it also features the typical iridescence, I’m in awe.

Certain kinds of volume textures work really well for stones  - Those are better than the stones you tried at top, in my opinion.

well there are many ways to do things in 2.5

but don’t forget with volumes you cannot add normal or bump map!
so the second set of stones don’t hae any normal values and n 3D effect on the surface?

but the first set have all normal values which givea more 3D effect on the surface

let see what other peoples can come up with

To be honest these need some work or need to have more than one planet texture and/or mixed with other procedurals.

These don’t look like a lot of stone patterns that I remember seeing, partly due to a mix of low resolution and aliasing.

Remember that good usage of procedurals involve using more than one in a material.

An animation test :

The blend file :

(a place where one can find the blender 2.5 with planet compilation :
http://www.zoo-logique.org/3D.Blender/index.php3?zoo=com)

That’s was my idea to start a new thread for theses
mean you cannot get best proc texture the first time and i’m only beginning to play with theses and certain it will take some times to get very good results and do a lot of experimentation

so hope other peoples can come up with good ideas and may be will get some new nice planet textures for planet but might be usefull for stones or other type of textures

happy 2.5

While you can’t use normalmaps with volumes, you can use transparency in the volumes themselves to get some nice detailed surfaces. I’ve seen experiments with that before…

well if you have some link or sample files then try to upload theses as example with some pic
so we can all learn a little more about theses

Thanks & happy 2.5

There you go, some googling and I found it again

By using very sharp gradients, very dense materials and quite high cutoff values you get relatively fast-rendering materials that work like high-detailed displacementmaps in a way…

With a good texture, you could archeive really nice, convincing effects, I guess

very interesting for volume texturing but no planet Text
wow i like the stones shape

problem
the files are not available anymore !

left a message but don’t know if he will see it soon!

if you have the filed can you upload these files here so other people can share theses

Thanks

Hmm, maybe I have them still around but they are sunken deeply in my messy archives.
I gotta search them…

Of course this is without planet texture. That wasn’t created back then. But I’m esentially trying the same right now…

I remember, he used a cloud texture at fairly low depth together with a ramp that’s black on one end and white on the other with just a very small gap between the colours so there is hardly any transition. You should easily be able to do that.
He used the toon shader and increased the reflectivity. The density scale was set pretty high.

The rendering mode was shaded.

'Till I find it, if it’s at all there anymore, you can play around with this yourself

ok but if possible i would like to have sample files so when newbies come in they can find examples from which you can work and play to modify and get some fast results

i’ will try to redo as you’v indicated some new textures for stone
and hope Farhthays see the message and give me new links
