Straight Razor

Hey all,

I had originally posted this in focused critiques ( As seen here: https://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?435877-Straight-Razor/page2 ), but have realized it should be here instead.

Here is my straight razor.

It’s by no way finished, but critiques always help.

Thanks!

Just working on the blocking.

Should I add a spray bottle of shaving cream, or a bar with a brush?

The razor handle looks out of place, it’s more like a handle for a folding knife instead of straight razor. The blade also looks too small, which might be an effect caused by the handle.

Sure there are different kinds and sizes of straight razors, even ones with a disposable blade (shavette), but there are similarities that come from the function and how those are used: the main function of the handle is to secure the blade, and secondary function is to provide a balance for the blade. The handle is usually slim, not very heavy, and the blade can rotate to the backside of the handle.

When in use, the handle is more or less in the way, and the blade is held from its neck. That’s why the blade neck (shank) is usually very flat, not rounded like yours. Some texture on it would provide some grip.

Anyone who does classic shaving with a safety razor or a straight razor will use a shaving soap. Even women who use a straight razor to shave their legs

The soap is in a container, the brush is soaked and then loaded with the soap. Then another bowl or cup can be used to build up the lather like whipped cream.

The reason a shaving soap is preferred is because it provides better protection, more of it is needed for classic shaving because it’s done in passes so it’s more economical than canned cream/gel, there’s less waste, and the list of ingredients is shorter than in canned products.

The bare minimum of stuff for classic shaving is: warm to hot water, lather, razor, towel, and aftershave (balm, cream, eau de toilette).

The hairs need to be softened for shaving with warm/hot water, for that there’s also pre-shave oils and creams, barbers use hot towels and may also use hot lather. Same for the brush if it’s made of animal hair, it soaks in warm water to soften the hairs.

If your scene has water, probably best to make it look warm with condensation around, and a bit of steam might help too. How to make bunch of shaving gear interesting is another matter.

JA12 thanks for the comments! Your right, the razor need a bit of work.

Right now I’m just getting everything into the scene, and will do better texturing/lighting later. I will keep this all in mind when I get to that part.

Shaving soap it is then.
