strange occurances

I have never had this issue before and I use Blender every day, 5-6 hours a day… I am using blender 2.78A
I have been working on modeling a house… - I’ve been learning …am not a pro… some things don’t always work out all the time… … the issue started yesterday and occurring again this morning…
Yesterday, I was trying to name my material white trim and when I hit enter after typing in the name, parts of my house disappeared… I had to hit ctrl+Z to get it back. Making a duplicate of something and moving it into place, and trying to edit it once in place, suddenly parts of the house once again disappeared… had to again do ctrl+Z to bring it back … a couple other things I tried to do, suddenly another part of it disappeared … this morning, I’m trying to figure out best way to do the roof… On part of it. I selected 4 verts and hit F to put on a face and suddenly the entire lower floor of the house disappeared… I hit ctrl+Z to go back and bring the lower floor back… pretty much knew the ctrl+Z would take away the roof function i had just done… but then suddenly the roof showed back up… I can’t figure out what is causing the parts of the house to just disappear… At one point yesterday, when I tried to do a “save” of the work I had been doing, the 2nd floor of the house went into wireframe view while the lower floor showed solid view (they are on same layer)… … …at one point, I thought maybe I had accidently hit the H key and hid the object, but I did alt+H and nothing was hidden… I’m stumped…
any idea what I can look for as to why this is happening? I don’t see anything that is wrong or set wrong… this is the first time, this has happened to me with a file…

thank you for your help

Yikes that sounds like the spirit world!

I would reboot the machine first.

If it keeps happening, swap out your keyboard and mouse, you may have a partially stuck key or mouse button. If not, try an earlier version of blender and see if it keep happening, if it does, try and get some kind of reproducible problem and we’ll go from there.

first get the latest build 2.79
there should be less bugs in it anyway and more tools

this will do a clean re install of bl and should work hopefully

happy bl

thanks … LOL… spirit world is what I was thinking… it was very strange…I’ve had issues now and then and I usually figure them out because it’s something I did that caused it… but this time, was something that has never happened before and was very strange… After posting I went back to working on the house and since the posting… had two strange occurrences so far… … one showed my object in Black instead of the texture I applied to it… and thought I had a key stuck when I typed “Brick” to name my texture I was using… … it would not type the K… I went to another screen and typed the K and it was working fine but would not type in Blender… I have the 2.79 downloaded… will use it for the next project I work on…
Thanks for replying back… I am loving working on blender and learning the 3D modeling… I work on it about 5-7 hours a day…

I have also been experiencing something similar lately – not sure what is going on. Sometimes when I undo, the entire piece I was working on goes away, and no amount of undo-ing will bring it back. I’ve tried turning off the Global Undo, but that doesn’t work.

Hmm, both Barbara and Safety what OS/blender version are you on?

Also can you you get the issue to reproduce consistently?

I’m on Windows 7 (work laptop). I can’t get the issue to reproduce consistently. I’ve never had this issue with Blender before. I’ll be in edit mode, hit undo, and the entire model I was creating will disappear – other parts of the model remain (those outside of edit mode). Weird.

I’ve heard stories of how Windows 7 is allegedly seeing its usability break down in an attempt to encourage people to upgrade to Windows 10 (especially when an update comes knocking).

If Barbara is also using Win7 (and both of you have updates enabled), the idea of the issue stemming from the OS could be a possibility (though any allegation of Microsoft crippling 7 would require hard evidence).

I’m using windows 10… Never had the issue happen before… it was working fine for part of the day and then suddenly it started doing the strange stuff… constantly… I checked different things and couldn’t figure out what was causing it… I didn’t know if I hit a key that might have caused it… no clue… when I booted the computer up the next day, it was still doing the strange occurances… still no clue as to why… later in the afternoon… it suddenly stopped and was working fine… I was really beginning to think it was possessed… LOL… at one point, suddenly the lower floor of the house I was creating, changed direction and turned black… and I’ve never seen only part of objects on the screen in wireframe and the other part in solid at the same time… usually if you go into wireframe, everything on the screen is in wireframe… but at one point, my 2-story of the house was in wireframe and the 1st-story was in solid… right now, am not having any issues happening and hope it don’t start again… I am now using a different version of Blender…
the next morning, I downloaded 2.79B and am using it now…

thanks everyone… I really had no idea what was happening and still don’t and right now, hoping it don’t happen again… I have a screen capture program… if it starts again with this new version… I’ll see if I can record what it is doing…

I’ve had that happen before too… will have done about 3 or 4 functions to something and go to undo the last function I did and it wipes it all out… but this weird stuff that was happening really was strange… just trying to name the material caused something to totally disappear… and the undo brought it back (thank goodness because I had a lot of work into it and sure hated to have to start it all over again…)
