Strange render outcome: character is not smooth

the character looks al fine in the render mode (shift z), but when rendering, al the smoothing is gone, it has a lot of sharp dents and corners…
I guess I did something wrong in the modelling? Or render settings? It’s my first blender project. Can anyone help me?

If you used a surface subdivision modifier it might be turned off for rendering.

Thanks! that was the problem

One problem is still there though: The fur of the tail, a particle system (hair) looks weired after rendering, not at all as in the preview…
this is rendered:

this is preview:

Make sure your particle system is below the subdivision modifier. Or above, I can’t recall which is right, but you will understand when I tell you that the Modifier stack is linear, and builds on the previous modifiers. This way the particle system gets confused when its base mesh gets subdivided.

Then again, I had problems even when I made sure that situation was correct. I think it has to do with subdivisions in either case; I think that when sculpting you will need to apply the multires before the particles start behaving normally. i’m not certain though.

thanks for the advice!.. actually I did use the particle system after applying the subdivision modifier. and i tried switshing the modifiers also, it didn’t help yet…

I'll try that with the multires, and see if that will fix the problem.

It should be particle system and subsurf below it.

One more idea - there is a checkbox titled “use modifier stack” near the beginning of particle properties menu, maybe that’s all you need to do? I don’t think that would have any effect on the viewport though. Still, worth to check.

hmm, I checked that checkbox, it’s checked. If I put the subsurf below the particle system the render gets worse. At the moment I have the subsurf above the particle systems.
It still looks the same. Well, I’ll finde out the problem somehow  maybe I’ll start again from the beginning with the fur

The simple quick fix: Set your subsurf levels to preview 1 & render 1 (not 1/2)

But I need a level 2 subsurf! , set the subsurfs to 2/2 in the particle system click ‘free edit’ and recomb everything.

Basically if the subsurf is above the particle system and you don’t want suprises, have both subsurf levels the same, either 1/1 or 2/2 (or 3/3)

Hooray, it worked! thanks a lot for all the help!!!
that last hint with the subsurf layers was the solution.
