Strange Smoke Simulation Results

Everytime I bake my smoke simulation I get very large, cubic smoke objects populating the domain.

The scene I am trying to achieve is an animated hand that produces smoke as it moves.

I cannot seem to get any type of typical smoke simulation from the hand model, even with the default smoke settings.

I have included a screenshot to show the artifacts in question. If anyone has experienced this and has a solution or possible suggestions to fix it, your help is greatly appreciated.
