Off the top of your head, what are the various ways you can add ‘stress’ to your objects? I know you can with soft body, cloth, and armature (haven’t tried it but I thought I read something on it). Are there other ways? Do shape keys work? Regular modifiers don’t seem to… including multires/sculpting. So, does anyone have any idea where the line is drawn on what does or doesn’t?
I got curious about it after toying with alternative ways of modeling/texturing bubbles and seafoam (if that makes sense).
u can also make ur object kake some stress with displacement mapping, sculpting and maybe if it too small then normal maps.
hope that helps if that dosent pls be more specific.
I did get the displacement modifier to to work, which I think will serve its purpose. I thought I had tried that already, but maybe I didn’t adjust the color ramp correctly. Thanks for suggesting a second look. Although, I still can’t get sculpting to yield results
try out few sculpting tuts then. any ways its good u got displacement map working. u can also just run a cloth or soft body simulation and then apply the modifier which will make ur mesh geometry the permanently same as it looks as u see after the simulation. try that
Something I recently found out was if you combine your stencil painting map to your displacement modifier, you can actually draw where you want your displacement, and how deeply you want it. I was very excited to figure it out, and if you need any examples I can post some on here.
It sounds to me like your initial request might be an “XY Problem,” which has been described in various ways thusly:
You want to do X, and you think Y is the best way of doing so. Instead of asking about X, you ask about Y.
You’re trying to do X, and you thought of solution Y. So you’re asking about solution Y, without even mentioning X. The problem is, there might be a better solution, but we can’t know that unless you describe what X is.
To answer question Y, without understanding larger problem (the context) X, will most likely not help them entirely with X.
If we could more-clearly understand what you are trying to achieve, “never mind how,” we might have a much better chance at offering you a best solution to your problem.
Here is the diffenetion of “Stress”:
5. Physics
a. An applied force or system of forces that tends to strain or deform a body.
b. The internal resistance of a body to such an applied force or system of forces.
Stress is associated with load on object and it is expressed in number. It causes deformation of body. Are you talking about the deformation, changing shapes?
Nowhere does it give the list of features which successfully alter the “stress” of the object as far as the map is concerned. I’m sorry if this wasn’t clear. Essentially, I was wondering what innovative uses for using stress maps might be (I was thinking bubbles or sea foam. See first post) For example, IF sculpting while using a multires modifier registered ‘change’ between the orco coordinates and the render coordinates then you COULD sculpt in color/alpha/spec/etc. changes. HOWEVER, I’ve not gotten this to work so i don’t think it does. The benefit to this would be to, perhaps, quickly add interesting texture to a sculpted object without UV unwrapping. Or sculpt in or otherwise add stretching translucency for rubber (as suggested by the documentation), again cutting out the need for UV texturing.
It was simply an idea and doesn’t pertain to any current project. Thanks for your help.
