Struggling to color model in Blender with Sculpt Mode

I just finished a 3D model. The issue is that it has subdivision surface applied to it so there are too many faces to deal with to color it in the Shading workspace. I tried using the paint brush in Sculpt Mode instead, but it did nothing. I do not have a tablet or pen, I use a mouse instead. So maybe that may be the issue?

I also tried painting in Vertex Paint mode, and it worked somewhat. But there are some parts of the model that stay white when I go over it. Not sure what to do other than find another program to color it and then when done, transfer the colored model back into blender. Any advice on what I can do?

Be aware you are vertex coloring your model in sculptmode. And if you add a subdivision surface modifier eg to a cube you still just can paint the unsubdivided cubes 8 vertices with vertex painting. The color for all the other points the subdiv modifier created are not directly editable and get interpolated color information applied. So deactivate the subdiv modifier while you are vertex painting, should you really want to vertex paint it.

But I’d say you should rather create a uvmapping and texture paint a model. Here’s a short tut for it. Its not for the newest version, but that doesnt matter here.

Thank you very much this was super helpful. The only other issue I have bumped into is that there is an option he selects at around the 1:50 mark of the tutorial that does not seem to be a part of the current version of Blender.

It is the part of the video where he has an option above the color wheel called Texture, and he selects Basic Color. What is Basic Color called now and where is it found?

The Texture Slots can eg be found at the top of the 3D Viewport as dropdown when you’re in Texture Paint Mode.
