SU-26 Aerobatic Airplane With Screenshots

Hey I have not seen many Aerobatic airplanes rendered in Blender or any other CGI program, so instead of making yet another WWII plane I made a SU-26. One of my favorite aerobats. It took about 30 hours to complete the model. Any C&C is welcomed. I do need to do some work in the panels, they kinda don’t align well. Eventhough I’m done modeling the hardest part is next (at least for me)…TEXTURING:eek: Does anybody have tips, tricks, guidelines, rules to live by, you know that sort of stuff… Basically I don’t know dittly squat about UV, bump maps, reflection maps…

Also the final scene will either be on the ground beside a hangar and/or flying performing a knife edge!

Interesting subject and, as I see, you didn’t use subdivision. There are some problems with normal (black distortion on surface on screenshoots from Blender - you should try Ctrl+N), but on render not visible at all. Did you render it in Blender or used external renderer?

Thanks for the normals tip, it worked. I did use subdivision, I think. And yes it is the internal renderer.

i wasn’t able to view the images (the request times out). do you have a photobucket or image shack account? i’d like to see this.

Hi,

nice subject, indeed!
Should your final render show a flight performance, you will want to use wingtip-smoke. Lots and lots of smoke :D:D.

I’ve noticed your allocation of vertices over the parts is a bit unequal: While the fuselage shows many subsections, the rudder and vertical stabilizer are quite rough around the edges. Still working on those areas, I assume…

This tutorial is good overall, but it has only a little bit of info on UV-mapping:

This one is more detailed, but it’s about using Cinema4D - with Blender things will be so much easier:

And as an alternative, the same process in 3DSMax:

When the mapping is done and you’re ready to paint:

Bartleby: Thanks for the links I have some reading to do today!

I uploaded the pictures in photobucket for the one who can’t see them, they show up fine in my end

Well I think that I am progressing pretty good. I only have to do is the prop blur some overall blur, realistic background (actual photograph), better lighting, get rid of that “plastic” look and smoke. Oh thosse particles are just there as a place holder for the real thing. Wonder if volumetric clouds are a good idea. Any ideas? Crits?

Hi,

nice idea with the pylon ripped open…

In this perspective the absence of a cockpit and pilot is too obvious, seeing the inside of the empty fuselage hurts the good overall impression. Here’s a photo from a simliar (but mirrored) viewpoint, to show what should be visible inside:
