I’ve been try to decide if I should make a short animation with this model. I haven’t used blender in a long time so this was a test to see how easy it would be to get good results. I am impressed with how much it has improved since the version I was using well over a year and a half ago.
I lost my old username so I had to make a new one. I guess I should have posted more, then I would remember it.
Here is the first test render with this model. I plan on using it many times more. I’m trying to get nice looking icebergs, and it has proven to be a bit difficult.
As for the animation part, the main thing that jumped out at me was the lack of camera and iceburg movement. (This is the ocean-- there is always movement, no matter how slight.) Also, the caustics projected onto the top of the sub were still. The water at the top would lap about, creating smooth refraction thingies like you see on the bottom of a pool. I don’t really know how you’d get this on the sub, though.
Thanks for the reply’s. I’ve been working on fixing the subtle movement all day. Hopefully I will have another animation up soon, or at least within the week.
For a more “true” underwater caustic effect, try applying an animated lightgel to a lamp. Ultimately the teture will need to be rayscale and used in the same maner as an alpha. You can probably find such a texture on the web especially if you look at various game developement sites. Developers use similar textures to give the illusion of animated fluids such as lava, water, etc. Try doing a search for Quake animated textures and I am sure that you will have something to go by even if it is to be used as a reference while creating your own. Hope this helps. Take care.
Thanks landis. I’ve been trying to get that effect done all week with much trouble. I’ll try your suggestion. Hopefully I’ll have an update soon, things are going slower than I wanted them to.

Also, here is the submodel by itself, This isn’t a render done in blender.
