Subdivide Issue

Hey blenders,
I am in the very early stages of this model and have come across a little problem. I did the very basic modeling using the mirror modifier, and now I’m looking to subdivide the model. The problem is that no matter what settings I seem to use (Merge, clipping, etc) I still seem to get this result:

Delete any internal faces on the centre line
